Bedwetting is involuntary urination during sleep which is most common in young children usually under the age of 6 or 7. Its is also referred as nocturnal enuresis and it has 2 types, primary enuresis and secondary enuresis. In Primary Enuresis, the patient never had dry night meaning he/she urinates daily during sleep and In secondary enuresis, urination usually happens with a break.
This problem usually resolves itself when the person crosses 7 years or later. Parents become too worried about this because they want children to stay dry too early in young age and this happens but not with every child. 95% of the children stay dry at night once they are 10 years old or more and studies place adult bedwetting rates between 0.5% to 2.3% approximately.
The symptoms of bedwetting are:
- Uncontrolled urination during night
- Wetting during the day as well
- Uncontrolled Bowel movements
- Cloudy Pinkish urine
- Burning sensation while urinating or Pain
To treat this, what you can do is take 6-8 oz. of cranberry juice one hour before going to bed. Also, avoid taking a lot of liquids before bedtime and make sure you empty your bladder before going to bed at night. Other then that, retention control training can work as well by postponing urination during the day first by few minutes and then gradually increase the time but that doesn’t meet you don’t urinate the whole day as that can be harmful. The person should eat a healthy diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables. To prevent bedwetting that happens because of constipation, the patient should eat a fiber rich diet.
Other then that if the problem is still there or the child is older then 7-8 years and he/she is still bedwetting, then consult your doctor and he will be able to guide you properly to get rid of the problem.
